designer iPad 2 cases Evidence of the existence of the Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx began to crop up in December, with an assortment of Picasa images and US operator inventory listings giving the Maxx moniker away.
Those rumours have been proved to be right on the money, with Motorola announcing the RAZR Maxx (or the Droid RAZR Maxx, to give it its proper US name) at CES 2012. Here’s how it’s shaping up.
1.2GHz dual-core CPU
The Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx is very similar to the Motorola RAZR in most ways. For example, it has the same 1.2GHz dual-core TI OMAP processor powering it along. This isn’t an issue at all, as this in one of the most capable processors currently on the market (until the first quad-core smartphones start to arrive).

4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen
It’s the same screen in the RAZR Maxx as in the RAZR, too. That means a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen that’s great for colour contrast, but that has received come criticism about picture sharpness and clarity. It’s also got a qHD resolution, which means it’s sharper than the Samsung Galaxy S 2 but not as sharp as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
8-megapixel camera
Continuing the similarities, the Motorola RAZR Maxx has the same 8-megapixel camera as the Motorola RAZR. That means it’s pretty decent, but nowhere near the best-in-class.
Android 2.3.5
The RAZR Maxx will ship with Android 2.3.5. Not the very latest version of the Android OS, then, but Motorola does list it at Android 4.0 upgradable. This suggests that the company won’t be slow about upgrading the RAZR Maxx to Ice Cream Sandwich.
Bigger battery
So what is different about the RAZR Maxx? The main difference is a bigger battery – but that’s a far bigger deal than it sounds. We’re not talking about a modest increase in capacity here – we’re talking almost double the 1730 mAh capacity of the Motorola RAZR at 3300 mAh. This means a claimed continuous talk time of 21.5 hours – well in excess of any of its rivals. At last – a smartphone that will last longer than a single day of usage.
