The Green Bay Packers had a very disappointing season in 08' with a 6-10 record. In 07' the Packers finished 13-3 and were a couple minutes away from playing in the Super Bowl. Packers fans want to believe that Aaron Rogers will take their team to the Super Bowl shortly. Brett Favre is an icon in Green Bay despite how his departure ended there. Aaron Rogers must show he is capable in taking the Packers to the Super Bowl, but he can't do it alone. The Packers have a very good team overall, an every down running back with Ryan Grant, a veteran WR in Donald Driver (who caught many passes from Favre), and a stellar defense that will improve over the course of the 09' season. With the exception of the Detroit Lions, the Packers will have to play their best if they expect to beat the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears, who are just as good as the Packers. The Packers have as good as a chance as any team to contend in the NFC in 09' - there are no dominant teams in this league and a team that gets on a hot streak can run the table. If the Packers think they can contend they must beat the Tampa Bays Buccaneers, Detroit Lions, and Cleveland Browns of the league. The good teams must beat the bad teams in the league in order to keep pace with the other good teams in their division - Packers must not play down to their lesser opponents. If Aaron Rogers is truly the heir apparent to Brett Favre he has a monumental task in front of him. While he can never be as great as Favre was, he can be Aaron Rogers and play to his abilities and strengths - however far that takes Green Bay remains a mystery so far.
&nb sp; Detroit Lions Show Steady Improvement in 2009 NFL Season
The Detroit Lions have no expectation for the 09' season really -- just don't go 0-16 and that will be good enough it seems. The Lions already improved in 09' winning in week 3 against the Washington Redskins 14-19 -- the teams first win since 07' against the Kansas City Chiefs in week 16. The Lions celebrated their first victory in years by high five-ing the fans in the crowd. The Detroit Lions have a uphill climb in every sense of the word. The Lions are basically starting from scratch and at 0-16, the entire roster besides Calvin Johnson needed an overhaul. The most important position in football is the quarterback, the Lions are hoping QB Matthew Stafford will help the Lions reach a 8-8 or 7-9 record -- which by Lions standards that would be a great season. The offense of the Lions ranks in the middle of the leagues teams, the defense is among the lower half in all major categories. The division the Lions play in, The NFC North, doesn't do them any good -- the Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears are all improved from last season. The Lions offense must not give away games and hand the opposing teams many turnovers. Rookie QB's turn the ball over often throwing interceptions, Matthew Stafford must stay calm and make smart decisions, easier said the done obviously. Hopefully in 09' the Lions can reach the .500 mark and maybe make the playoffs one year. If any city deserves a winning football team for once its Detroit, they have been beyond patient with their team.Matthew Stafford can be the only one carrying the team, Calvin Johnson must play like one of the best wide receivers in the game and help make Stafford look good. The Detroit Lions might not win many games but better days surely lay ahead.
&nb sp; Are the St Louis Rams the Worst NFL Team?
The "greatest show on turf" of the St. Louis Rams achieved earlier in the decade has long been gone as of 2009. The Rams franchise has fallen off the map badly since the glory days of Kurt Warner and Marshall Faulk. The Rams hit rock bottom in 08' with a record of 2-14 -- worse then the 07' season when they went 3-13. The last winning season for the Rams was in 03', they went 12-4 winning the NFC West division. If it wasn't for the Detroit Lions, Oakland raiders and Kansas City Chiefs, the Rams would be the worst franchise of the last 5 years. The 09' season for the Rams won't be much better, if they get 4 wins that would be considered a successful season. QB Marc Bulger and Kyle Boller are nearly identical when it comes to their stats -- which means it doesn't really matter which is in the game because the chance of the Rams winning doesn't improve. Marc Bulger has a few good seasons with the Rams - in 06' Bulger threw for over 4,000 yards and 24 touchdown passes with only 8 interceptions. The last two seasons for Bulger have been less then stellar with more interceptions then touchdown passes. The only player the Rams have worth the price of a ticket is RB Steven Jackson. Jackson is averaging nearly 5 yards per rushing attempt in 09'. Jackson's best season up to this date was in 06' when he rushed for over 1,500 yards and 13 touchdowns. It's safe to say the Rams will get a high draft pick in the 10' draft. One could only wonder where the Rams should begin in rebuilding. Perhaps a young quarterback to build the franchise around. Steven Jackson isn't get any younger and it's a shame his career is being wasted on a very bad team.
&nb sp; NFL Draft Spotlight by Team - #2 Pick by the Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions look to build off of their 2-14 record of the '09 season (it's better than 0-16!) and try to get out of the cellar of the NFC North. The Lions took their franchise QB with Matt Stafford last year, and they need to slowly rebuild to keep up with Green Bay's young stars. They try to mix a strong draft with acquiring good free agents to turn over their team quicker. This year they've got Kyle Vanden Bosh and Nate Burleson as their big free agent acquisitions. The team overpaid for Burleson, but if he can provide a good second option to Calvin Johnson, he will be worth it. Kyle Vanden Bosh was a good pickup if he can bring his relentless pursuit of the QB and playing to the whistle. He can be a good locker room guy for the Lions, who could use a few more of those. The Lions picked up linebackers last year, but this year in the draft, they need a defensive line. This year, expect the Lions to pick Ndamukong Suh from Nebraska with the #2 pick. Minnesota won the division, and so teams in the NFC North will need to find a way to stop Adrian Peterson. It starts with the D-Line, and Detroit will have their pick of Suh or Gerald McCoy from OU. In the end, expect the team to go with Suh. He was the more highly touted player throughout the year, even a Heisman finalist, which will give him an extra push over McCoy in the draft.
